Releasing Stress and Anxiety: Steps to Find Calm

emotional and spiritual wellbeing lifestyle changes mindfulness and self-care Dec 06, 2024

Stress and anxiety can feel overwhelming. Life’s challenges sometimes pile up, making it hard to feel calm or in control. I’ve been there—those moments when the weight of everything feels too heavy to bear. But through my journey, I’ve discovered tools and practices that help release that tension and create space for peace. Let me share what has worked for me and might work for you, too.

My Personal Story

When I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, I knew right away that stress would be a major factor in my health. The fear of what lay ahead, the pressure to make decisions, and the weight of uncertainty felt like too much to carry. I understood that if I didn’t address my stress, it could take an even greater toll on my physical and emotional well-being.

I started small—sitting quietly, focusing on my breath, and allowing myself moments of stillness. It wasn’t perfect, but I felt a sense of calm that encouraged me to keep going. As I incorporated mindfulness, set boundaries, and made time for self-care, I felt more in control and less overwhelmed. These practices became my lifeline and can support you, too.

Simple Steps to Release Stress and Find Calm

  1. Embrace Deep Breathing

Deep breathing was one of the first things that helped me. I would sit in a quiet space, breathe in deeply for a count of four, hold for four, and exhale for six. It calmed my racing heart and reminded me I had the power to respond to stress with ease.

  1. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness helped me stay present during stressful times. I focused on my breath or paid attention to the beauty around me—like the warmth of the sun or the sound of birds outside. These simple moments grounded me and brought clarity.

  1. Set Boundaries

Saying “no” kindly but firmly became essential for my peace. I realized I needed to protect my energy by prioritizing what truly mattered. Boundaries created space for rest and joy, which helped ease my stress.

  1. Move Your Body

Gentle movement like walking or stretching helped release tension. One of my favorite routines became walking in the evening—it felt like letting the stress of the day melt away.

  1. Create a Peaceful Environment

I decluttered my space and added calming touches like lavender diffusers and soft lighting. These small changes helped me create a sanctuary where I could unwind and recharge.

  1. Reframe Stressful Thoughts

Reframing my thoughts wasn’t always easy, but it made a big difference. Instead of “I can’t handle this,” I would remind myself, “I’m learning and growing through this challenge.” It shifted my mindset and gave me strength.

Moving Toward Calm

Stress and anxiety don’t have to control your life. By taking small steps to manage stress, you can create space for peace and joy. It’s not about eliminating stress entirely—it’s about responding to it in a way that nurtures your well-being.

You are capable of finding calm, no matter how overwhelming life feels. Start small, be patient with yourself, and know that you’re not alone in this journey. If I can do it, so can you.
